Advancing international cooperation to strengthen Iraq's border security and fostering regional stability
15-04-2024

The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), in collaboration with the EUAM Iraq and the National Security Advisory of Iraq, convened a workshop on International Cooperation within the framework of Iraq's National Integrated Border Management (IBM) Strategy.

Stakeholders from Iraq (including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Civil Aviation Authority, Border Port Commission) and the international community discussed critical aspects of border management, best practices and explored opportunities for increased international cooperation. "The idea is to support Iraqi partners to achieve open, well-controlled and secure borders in Iraq," summarised of the Head of Operations of EUAM Iraq in his keynote speech.

The shared borders with Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudia Arabia, Jordan and Syria, present unique characteristics and challenges for Iraq. The Iraqi IBM strategy contributes to secure and stable borders, thus reducing the risk of tensions and conflicts related to border issues. IBM also plays a pivotal role in preventing the infiltration of extremist groups, smuggling of weapons, and trafficking of illicit goods, as well as combating illegal migration.

The workshop is a part of an EU-funded project on “Integrated Border Management in the Silk Routes Countries”, implemented by ICMPD.
