Workshop enhances strategic leadership capacity at the Iraqi MoI
01-11-2021

14 senior leaders from the Iraqi Ministry of the Interior (MoI) participated in a Senior Strategic Leadership and Change Management workshop to enhance their professional skills.

The week-long workshop was a pilot project organised by EUAM Iraq with the financial contribution of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The workshop gave participants a theoretical overview of leadership theories, offering also practical case-based scenario exercises to try out different approaches that can contribute towards creating a stronger and result-oriented ministry. In addition, the event provided a space for increasing inter-agency cooperation and coordination between the 14 senior strategic leaders, including two female officials.

It is the first time an EU mission conducts an activity aimed at enhancing the professional capacities of officials and leaders at such high level. We hope that the Ministry of Interior, its senior experts, and consequently the country can truly benefit from this process and that this pilot project has planted a seed which we will be able to develop further.

The workshop is an example of EUAM Iraq’s continuous support to the Iraqi Ministry of Interior.  Major General Ziad Taha Ali, the Director of the General Directorate of Training and Qualification at the MoI appreciated the efforts made by the Mission which contribute to developing the efficiency of the performance of the various agencies of the Ministry of Interior.

We would like to thank all those in charge of implementing the project to support the strategic capabilities of the senior leadership of the Ministry and the implementation of the workshop that took place for five days at the Commanders Preparation and Qualification Center. It was a distinguished and effective workshop through the participation, dialogue, and exchange of information. We extend our thanks to the German government and people for financing this project and look forward to continuing the implementation of the next stages and making full use of this important project.

The workshop facilitation was carried out by DCAF-Geneva Centre for Security Governance, based in Geneva, Switzerland with a long history in supporting countries and organisations to improve the governance of their security sectors. The Centre director Thomas Guerber explained the importance of this kind of a training process.

- Good security sector governance - within a framework of democratic governance, the rule of law, respect for human rights and gender equality - is a cornerstone of sustainable development and the key to improving the security of states and their people.
