16-04-2024

EUAM Iraq in collaboration with the Finnish Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) delivered a two-day workshop for different entities of the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice, and Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism office on the risks of virtual currency.

The use of "virtual currencies", also known as crypto currencies, is twofold. They are commonly used worldwide on trading platforms for investment purposes under the international agreements, but due to tracing challenges they are also used in criminal activities.

Although, crypto currencies are banned in Iraq, they could be used to finance criminal activities and represent a real threat. It is a new challenge for Iraq's operational environment and crime prevention. The Iraqi authorities have recognised this and want to strengthen their capacity to actively address this challenge.

The workshop raised awareness on how to trace virtual currencies and the importance of international and national cooperation especially when it comes to virtual currencies
