Malta/Iraq: EUAM Iraq accompanied an Iraqi delegation to a regional workshop organised by Strong Cities Network in cooperation with the International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ) supported by the European Union in Malta.

The Workshop aimed at strengthening the role of cities in the prevention of hate, polarisation and violent extremism in the Middle East and North Africa and to identify Emerging Challenges, Needs and Good Practices. Mayors, governors and local leaders from across the MENA region, as well as civil society organisations and regional and multilateral partners attended the workshop.

The event provided a good opportunity for the Iraqi delegation to gain insights into how other MENA countries have arranged the national-local cooperation in the prevention of violent extremism within different thematic areas. They also shared experiences of the implementation of the local action plans for the prevention of violent extremism.

Violent extremism remains a global threat and requires strong international collaboration. EUAM Iraq continues to strongly support efforts to implement the Iraqi Strategy for Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) which focuses on preventive measures in thematic areas such as Education, Youth, Media, Government, Security and Justice Institutions.
